SOMERSET ACADEMY PHILOSOPHY

The preschool, prekindergarten and young 5's programs at Somerset Academy for Young Children have a strong child development emphasis based on the application of the theories of Dr. Jean Piaget, a developmental psychologist well known for his work studying the cognitive development of children.

To apply the Piagetian model, the preschool and prekindergarten classrooms are divided into learning centers which emphasize building skills and development in language, math, music, art, computer, gross motor, socialization, sensory development and dramatic play.

The teachers guide and encourage children to explore and learn in each of these learning centers while implementing the curriculum through meaningful play. As teachers facilitate, participate, and observe children’s play, specific learning outcomes are achieved and children develop their sense of curiosity and discovery.

Child development research informs us that children construct knowledge through hands-on experiences. Our program provides materials and equipment appropriate to the children’s developmental levels. The daily schedule provides time for learning in all areas of cognitive and social development, and includes an outdoor program which we consider an extension of the classroom.
